Update log
Five free PDF tools, and an editor that remembers your work
We looked closely at the PDF tools people already use and listened to what they complain about: uploads, daily limits, surprise charges, lost work. Then we added the everyday tools ScanKit was missing, without any of that. All of it is free, runs in your browser and never uploads your files.
New
Merge PDFs
Put several PDFs together into one file, in the order you choose.
Split a PDF
Keep only the pages you need (type them like 1-3, 5), save every page as its own PDF, or cut a long file every few pages. Several files come together in one ZIP.
Compress a PDF
Shrinks the photos and scans inside a PDF while text and drawings stay sharp. On a photo-heavy test file it went from 1.1 MB to 140 KB. You see the size before and after, and if a file cannot be made smaller, it tells you instead of handing back the same file.
Images to PDF and PDF to images
Turn JPG, PNG and other pictures into one PDF, at each picture’s size, A4 or US Letter. Or save every page of a PDF as a JPG or PNG, sharp enough for screen, everyday use or print.
Rotate pages, add blank pages, add another PDF
The page list in the editor now has a rotate button on every page, a + Blank page button, and + Add PDF to bring in the pages of another file. Everything is saved into one PDF.
The editor remembers your work
If you close the tab or your browser restarts, the editor offers to pick up where you left off, with every change in place. Your work is kept only in your browser on this device, never uploaded, and you can discard it with one click.
Find and replace
With Edit text picked, type a word and what it should become, then press Replace all. Like a normal text edit, the old words are taken out of the file, not hidden under a white box, and Undo puts them back.
Improved
Clear about what a scanned look is
The Print tool now says it plainly under the download button: the result is a simulation of a printed or scanned page, not proof that a paper original or a real scan exists. Exported PDFs already say they were made with ScanKit.
Edited text matches better
A retyped line now takes a truer ink colour from the page, and while you type, its background stops where the original text ends, so nothing next to it is hidden.
Good to know
- Merge and split keep how pages look, but a form’s fields may stop being fillable afterwards. Fill in the form first.
- Compress shrinks JPEG photos and scans, the most common kind. Some pictures, like CMYK print images, are left as they are.
- A page can be rotated before you add marks to it. If it already has marks, undo or delete them first.
